Six British Citizens Jailed for One Million Pound Arson Attack on Warehouse Holding Aid for Ukraine

A group of six individuals from Britain acting for the Wagner mercenary group linked to Russia have been handed jail terms for igniting a located in London warehouse that was holding relief supplies intended for Ukraine.

Court Rulings and Involvement

Sentencing the men, the judge at the central criminal court stated that they had orchestrated a “campaign of terrorism and sabotage” to benefit the Russian government.

Dylan Earl was given a 17-year jail term with an extra six-year period on supervised release due to his “leading role”. Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was given 12 years in prison with an additional year on extended licence. Their admitted crimes made them the initial persons to be convicted under the 2023 National Security Act.

Jakeem Rose, aged 23, also a Croydon resident, was sentenced to a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, from Thornton Heath, south London, was given nine years imprisonment and Ugnius Asmena, 21, who was without a fixed address, was given seven years in prison. These three individuals were each found guilty of serious fire-setting and received a further year on extended licence by the judge.

Ashton Evans drug dealer from Newport in Gwent, was jailed for nine years with an extra year on extended licence after being found guilty of failing to disclose details regarding terrorist acts relating to a separate scheme in Mayfair.

Details of the Attack

The arson attack on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London endangered sixty fire service personnel and resulted in one million pounds worth of destruction in March of the previous year.

The court heard that Earl, 21 and Reeves, 24 did not leave their bedrooms while coordinating the incident for the Wagner mercenary organization, acting on behalf of the Russian Federation.

The group selected the storage facility because it was being used to supply humanitarian aid and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the identical Ukrainian firm was subjected to an arson attack ten days afterward in the Spanish capital, detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command assumed control of the probe.

Proof and Additional Schemes

When Earl was taken into custody, police analysis of his cellphone uncovered he had recordings of the warehouse fire being started and was in communication with the Wagner group on Telegram, via an user profile with the usernames ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike’.

Some of the communications indicated that preliminary surveillance for further “missions”, involving arson attacks at a restaurant and wine shop in Mayfair belonging to the Russian opposition figure Evgeny Chichvarkin had already taken place. The use of explosives to damage buildings was also discussed.

Investigators discovered that Earl was also considering the possibility of kidnapping the dissident Chichvarkin and “sending him back to Russia to face prison”.

The individual involved in narcotics from Elmesthorpe in Leicestershire had talked about another potential attack in the Czech Republic.

In a residence inspection, law enforcement located a flag of Russia, over twenty thousand pounds in currency and cocaine hydrochloride with a street value of approximately thirty-four thousand pounds.

Motivations and Judicial Remarks

The proceedings revealed he was a participant in numerous channels promoting Russian propaganda and was motivated by “plain and severe avarice”.

“This case is about the efforts of the Russian Federation to gain pernicious global influence using social media to recruit disruptors far from the Russian capital.”

She found the arson attack had a “terrorist connection” irrespective of if the perpetrators knew it. The Wagner group is proscribed by the UK government as a terrorist organisation.
